Revamping Our Education System

The world we live in is changing rapidly and our education system must evolve with it. It is demanding for more inquisitive, creative minds and for tech savvy skills. Unfortunately, the kind of education that is currently being provided in our schools is either not being taught properly or is not going to benefit the students in their practical lives. It has become imperative that we change our old-fashioned teaching ways with respect to modern technology.

Nowadays, schools have become accustomed to forcing children to practice rote learning rather than conceptual learning. I feel that this method of pedagogy shortens the boundaries of creativity, individual thinking, and most importantly a sense of originality in oneself over time. Apart from this, we seriously need to train our teachers' egoistic personality and their blatant favoritism. In many schools, teachers tend to give more attention to only one child who scores the highest while neglecting all the others. This shows that teachers are the ones to kindle the feeling of inferiority and comparison within the students. Why can’t teachers appreciate everyone’s diverse thoughts and potential and stop giving children admonishing looks? What peace do they obtain by destroying others' self-esteem which has only begun to bloom and flourish?

“The most important thing we learn at school is the fact that the most important things can't be learned at school.”- Haruki Murakami

Moreover, we need to think beyond the conventional means of teaching and delivering lectures which are fast becoming outdated and inefficient compared to modern means. For instance, the use of multimedia and field trips for better concepts rather than boxing up children in classrooms for hours should be encouraged and normalized. Mostly, our education system very conveniently ignores soft or life skills. These skills include communication and social skills, practical application of knowledge like solving real life problems that are encountered everyday and everywhere. We must centralize our education system around these skills and provide children with thought provoking knowledge outside the books as well. This will prepare them to face the hurdles in this ever-evolving world. Our outdated education system’s focal point is scoring marks and it becomes the main target for students as well. Consequently, they have to endure intolerable burdens instead of enjoying the process of gaining knowledge and learning about the world they live in. It becomes nothing short of a gruesome rat race.

Unless we realize how education plays a major part in molding up our lives, we will not be able to look into the factors which hinder our children’s capabilities and keep them from reaching their true potential. We need to teach everyone individually according to their unique interests and abilities. The world needs more originality, innovation and this new mode of thinking has to be initiated at the very basic level and in our basic building blocks i.e. in our schools and education system as a whole. In essence, educational institutions should be the places where children are encouraged, stimulated and allowed to bloom instead of being bullied, harassed, or criticized. At the very least, the extensive and arduous long hours they spend in schools should be of some use!
