Israel saw the largest protests in its 72-year history. Civilian masses took to the streets and protest outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Smolenskin Street residence. These protests erupted due to the government’s poor handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Israel has reported 72,315 cases and 531 deaths since the pandemic struck. The government took few firm measures and was unable to control the surge of cases. The unemployment rate has surpassed 21% and thousands are barely surviving on past savings. The anger and frustration erupted into massive protests and over 10,000 infuriated and frustrated civilians joined the protest in central Jerusalem.

The protesters called out slogans like “Crime minister” while others blew on horns and demanded the resignation of the Prime Minister. Adding to the handling of the virus, the government is also accused of corruption. The Prime Minister is undergoing trial for corruption charges.

Israeli police’s response to the protests hasn’t been less violent. Officers have been tearing down signs and tents, dragging dozens of people into detention, and using water cannon to disperse crowds.

Not to mention: according to local sources speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), the Palestinian COVID-19 testing clinic in the Silvan street, East Jerusalem was by Israeli police after they raided and arrested four Palestinian activists. No explanation was given by the Israeli police, but according to Haaretz, the clinic was closed on the suspicion that the COVID-19 test kits were provided by the Palestinian Authority.

Though some peace seems to be restored, the protests are far from ended.
