We are living in a world where diseases are widespread and where we are facing a global pandemic of Coronavirus. In such a state, its our responsibility to stay healthy, which becomes dependent on staying immune to such diseases.

The thought of impending sickness has a lot of people on the edge and it brings on anxiety in many people. People suffering through COVID-19 have markedly different experiences. Some report nothing more than symptoms of mild cold, others are hospitalized and some even die as there lungs become inflamed. It has become increasingly clear that the immune system plays a significant role in recovery from the global virus. Most corona virus deaths have been recorded due to poor immune system going erratic in its response, and not damaged by the virus itself. If a person is infected by the corona virus the body launches its immune defense. The goal of the innate immune defense is to contain the virus and prevent it from replicating too widely as the virus specific response has enough time to kick in before things get out of hand. Another type is the adaptive immune system, that adapts through our lives, and passive immune system, that is borrowed from another source and it lasts for a short time. However the virus will replicate and spread rapidly before the immune system wrestles it under control.

“Staying home is not the only way to be safe!”

Another reason the body can lose control over the virus lies in the immune system itself. The most vulnerable populations during the pandemic are the elderly people whose immune systems naturally starts to decline with age. It is important to preserve our well being in the pandemic. We live in a hyper connected world where there are always going to be pathogens that come into our lives. This is not the first time in recent years that we have faced a sweeping viral enemy and it won't be the last. All of us have an amazing immune system but for that to remain we need to give the body, proper conditions. Vitamins and minerals are important for staying healthy; including Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and Zinc. Fruits and vegetables also boost immunity including ginger, garlic, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, eggs, spinach and yoghurt. Whereas caffeinated beverages and processed food can harm the immune system. During this pandemic we at home have taken all things that help boosting immunity including the “Senna Makki leaves” tea.

The easiest way to boost immunity is to eat well and it can be sustainable for a very long time. For now our best defense against the virus is to support our immune system with sleep, exercise and good nutrition and most importantly what we should be following sitting at home is to wash our hands and practice social distancing so that we don't get affected in the first place. All these are not to follow only for the current pandemic but to prepare ourselves for any next unseen global pandemic.
